The rainbow party went off without a hitch! Three-year-olds are easy to please.
I know most party tables feature elaborate displays of decorations and party favors and goodies, but what can I say...ours just had food. Somehow I managed to not notice that the candy on the right was not in rainbow order, so you'll have to forgive that oversight...I promise it was cute and tasty despite the lack of perfection. And you can see I didn't make the ubiquitous rainbow layer cake, but sprinkles on a few cupcakes were MUCH easier.
Origami cubes!
Now, I know this cake is anything but rainbowy, but I have the coolest bundt pan ever, and I couldn't not use it. Can you tell we've never glazed a weird-shaped bundt cake before? Who cares...it tasted amazing (browned butter glaze!). (The ribbon flags are from Lily Jane Stationery.)
It was slightly tedious to stitch rainbow stripes on the invitations, but the texture of sewn paper is so nice.
And here we have the key to party planning bliss....don't plan anything! This was the only activity I had for the kids, and they didn't even care. They loved ignoring my coloring guidelines as they scribbled all over this butcher paper taped to the coffee table. Then they ran off and played with toys. Perfect.
And lastly, the party store pretty much did with this part for me. I just grabbed one balloon out of each bin, going down the line of all the colors. Done.
I was going for cute but not cutesy, and I'm giving myself a hearty pat on the back. It's good that birthdays are only once a year.
I love the oragami squares!
ReplyDeletethanks, naomi! me too....we're leaving them up till they all fall down. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the origami cubes(!!) and that bundt cake.
ReplyDeleteSimply stunning!
ReplyDeletewill you plan parties for my children? i think they will like them. :)
ReplyDeleteoh, and where did you find that bundt cake mold?
wow, such a great party! i love the origami cubes and the cake especially - could be great for a winter birthday. to me it kind of looks like the matterhorn ride at disneyland!
ReplyDeletesarah...i'll do it. but i'm pretty sure you'll be amazing at planning your kids' parties. the cake mold is from williams-sonoma....it's perfect. i've never seen a cake bake so evenly...and i know it's because of the quality of the pan because our oven sucks. :)
ReplyDeleteThe origami cubes are so clever. Nicely done.
ReplyDeletehello mommy of the year! this is a ROCKING party! just enough without being too much! i think that might sum your design aesthetic up maybe? such restraint! I LOVE IT!

ReplyDeleteTHIS party is fabulous! I think there is so much beauty in simplicity and you definitely found it. The origami boxes are amazing, the cake is perfection, and the lack of overly-planned games is one of my favorite memories from childhood parties. Thanks for sharing your brilliance.
